Clonmore Late Medieval Church This late medieval church is typical of that period. It was built using roughly coursed limestone slabs and some large blocks. The rectangular building is almost 10 metres long and was probably divided into a nave and chancel. The remaining structure has undergone many alterations. The north wall is almost completely missing and the south wall, pictured below, has four large window openings that were inserted later, the original south doorway was partially blocked and used as one of the window opes. There is an archway in the east gable, which is probably also later addition. The lintelled doorway and the arched window in the west gable were also inserted at a later date. It is believed the chuch has been in ruin since 1692.
Leaning against the east gable is a graveslab, pictured below left, with the following inscription: HEERE UNDER LYETH THE CORPS OF MRS ELISABETH NETTERVILL WHO DECEASED 27 OF DESEMBER ANNO DOMINE 1651. I particularly like the carvings on the graveslab pictured below right, the inscription reads: INRI IHS Erected by Dominick Rath in memory of his son Thomas Rath, who died Decr 23rd 1795 aged 27 yrs. |
